Pennant, Saturday

Round 8 Preview – Weekend Pennant

Welcome to Round 8

We are expecting a top temperature of 23 degrees. Morning showers are expected to clear by the start of play but we may still get some rain showers.

The second half of the season starts this weekend.

Here is a quick summary of the first 7 rounds.

Ladder Position Wins Losses Draws
Side 1 3 5 2
Side 2 5 3 4
Side 3 3 5 2
Side 4 7 1 6
Side 5 7 2 4 1
Side 6 7 1 6
Side 7 7 2 5

At the completion of round 7, there are only 2 sides that are in the top four of their section, so there is plenty of work to do if we are to have Berwick representing in finals play come March.

This week we welcome sides from Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Mordialloc, and Noble Park.

Last time they met…

Side 1 defeated Mordialloc 1 at home by 12 shots. This week they travel to take on the 6th placed Mordialloc side. The 1’s were not at full strength last week at home and faded against the top of the table Keysborough. They will be looking to regain some winning form and make it 2 from 2 against the Mordy side.

Side 2 defeated Cranbourne 2 by 14 shots at Cranny. With the home match this week and a bit of a different looking side from round 1, the 2’s will be looking to post their 4th win of the season and make their claims for a finals berth.

Side 3 defeated Cranbourne RSL 1 by a single shot at home in Round 1. This is the match of the round in round 8 as 3rd placed Berwick travels to the RSL to battle for 2nd spot on the ladder. Both sides won their round 7 match last week and this promises to be a hard-fought contest, with a significant reward to the victor.

Side 4 defeated Narre Warren 2 by 5 shots at Narre in round 1. This is the fourth side’s only win so far this season. Narre Warren is sitting 4th on the ladder, and they won’t be a pushover when they come to play at Berwick. The fours will need to get some of their close losses turned into wins in the 2nd ½ of the season.

Side 5 lost to Cranbourne 3 by only 2 shots in round one. They’re traveling down Clyde road this weekend and will find that third-placed Cranbourne will be even more difficult to beat on their home track. The 5’s posted their 2nd win of the season last weekend and winning form is always good form.

Side 6 went to Mordialloc in round 1 and was defeated by 3 shots. The Sixers have had a number of pretty close losses and some that were not so close and have found the move up a division to be a big challenge this season. Mordialloc 2 are coming to Berwick this week though and a close contest is likely again this week.

Side 7 went to Noble Park in round one and were thoroughly beaten, dropping 37 shots to the now 6th placed Noble Park 2 side. This is a hard match-up again at home when we’re playing the 2nd side from the opposing club, but every week is a new week and the 7’s will need to try hard from the very start of the game.

In round 1 the Wickers managed 4 wins, it would be great to see an improvement in round 8.

GO WICKERS!
