Keen students of Saturday Selection will notice a few changes between some sides this week. There’s a good reason for this…As we enter the final 4 rounds of Saturday Pennant some specific selection criteria must be adhered to.
Here’s an extract of the relevant entry from the Bowls Victoria Conditions of play for Metropolitan Pennant.
21.2 For the last four rounds of a Metropolitan Pennant Competition … no Side will include more than three players who have played a majority of their games, prior to the fourth last game, in a higher numbered Side.
This condition uses the Side Number to determine higher and lower sides , the playing division may be the same.
Our selection committee needs to apply this condition for the coming 4 rounds, and the eligibility of players will change as more games are played.
Takes on the section’s undefeated ladder leaders Mentone 1 at Mentone. The 1’s have a daunting task this week, and a victory is unlikely. The 1’s won’t be taking it easy though and will continue to show their fighting spirit on a tough away match-up.
The remaining matches for the 1’s are an opportunity for growth and are invaluable in shaping the development of the squad.
Meets up with 2nd placed Caulfield Park Alma 1 at home. Caulfield lost to Mentone 2 last round and this is a great chance for the 2’s to consolidate a finals position. Two more good opportunities remain after this round to capture a couple of additional wins against Mulgrave CC 2 and Armadale 1 before the final round against current ladder leaders Brighton 1.
This should be penciled in as a win for the 3’s. Church hill Park Waverley Golf 1 are in the 10th spot on the ladder. The only danger here is the away venue. The 3’s should win 3 out of the next four, and make sure of a good position in the finals. The next step, is Saturday and getting a solid win away from home.
A home game this week against 9th placed Mt Waverley 3. Like the 3rd side, this really should be a win for the 4’s and create an opportunity to close the gap to 2nd placed Vermont South. The final 3 weeks see the wickers face off against the top two sides in the section, so a win here is essential to any chance of getting a home final.
Third plays forth this week and Narre Warren 2 will be keen to overtake Berwick on the ladder. This is in many ways the match of the round. Last time round the game was very close with Berwick coming out on top, but Narre has the home green advantage this week and will be very keen to jump into 3rd spot.
The sixes reclaimed top spot last week, and this weeks opponent should be another win. Narre Warren 3 are in 9th and looking to avoid relegation, but the 6’s should prevail at home. The run to the finals will give the sixes a few games to really tune up their game and put some space between themselves and the rest of the section.
Brighton has handed the 7’s a walkover this week, sadly.
This week the 8’s are off to Burden Park, and a win here could see the wickers jump up to take Burden Park’s 6th spot on the ladder. The 8’s are not yet safe from relegation, with only 9 sides in the section. The remaining games aren’t easy and the win here is important to stay away from 8th spot.
The ninth side is only 11 points away from 5th placed Dandenong Club 4, so this week’s game is for a ladder position. There is a great chance of collecting a few more wins this season, starting on Saturday. The last time they met was away and the Dandenong Club side took the win, but home green and the chance of moving to 5th should be a help this round.
Enjoy the day, enjoy the game, and……let’s get some wins.
